The City of Cape Town has invited artists and creative practitioners to submit concept proposals for public artworks at the new MyCiTi Bus Station, built in Claremont. The station is to be built in coming months and will be a major public transport hub within the Metro-Southeast Corridor. This is known as Phase-2A of the MyCiTi roll-out.
Reportedly, this initiative forms part of the ongoing commitment of the City of Cape Town to integrate the high-quality public art into transport infrastructure. It has enhanced the commuter experience while celebrating the cultural, historical and environmental identity of the communities it serves.
Submissions for this are now open and will close on Friday, March 27, 2026. Further, the Claremont bus facility will be the first and largest station on the Metro-Southeast Corridor.
Considering it as a high-volume interchange, the planned Claremont MyCiTi Bus Station has been identified as a focus for artworks, with multiple large-scale artwork opportunities for the internal and external walls. It is a prominent curved glass facade and is possible sculptural elements.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas said that this is an exciting opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity, while celebrating the history of Claremont, that enhances the look of the area.
Market-related budget will be allocated which will be based on size, materials and installation of artworks across different spaces in the precinct. Artists can apply for one space per application.
Furthermore, separate submissions are needed for multiple spaces around the MyCiTi bus station. The Urban Mobility team is extremely excited to receive the proposals. As these spaces that artists will be responding to in Claremont includes:
- Prominent concrete and vertical wall surface (approximately 12m x 9m)
- Curved glass façade (approximately 25m x 5m)
- Foyer entrance wall
- Platform-adjacent walls
Artists will be further required to describe their proposed concept and provide preliminary design ideas that outline the main idea and visual approach. They are requested to share online links to their previous work. It is an open call to South African residents and artist collectives.
