Cape Town: The Corporate Services and Economic Growth Directorates of the City of Cape Town will demand for Council’s approval in March 2026 to enter into a lease agreement with the National Department of Home Affairs to establish an appointment-only office at the Civic Centre in Cape Town.
The City of Cape Town was approached by the Ministry of Home Affairs via the Office of the Mayor to establish an appointment-only Home Affairs Office at the Cape Town Civic Centre in Hertzog Boulevard in the CBD. This initiative forms part of a collaborative effort between the City and National Government civic services for residents.
However, this proposed facility will be located on the second floor of the Civic Centre. The Department of Home Affairs will enter into a formal lease agreement with the City to secure the space.
The Department of Home Affairs will be granted early occupation in order to commence the internal construction and operational readiness activities upon conclusion of the lease. The item is scheduled to be submitted to Council for consideration and approval in March, if all goes as planned.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate Services – Alderman Theresa Uys said that once established, this dedicated Home Affairs office will enhance service delivery by providing Cape Town residents with streamlined, appointment-based access to key national government services within a centrally located City facility.
She said that they are eager to get a nod of approval from the Council for this very important collaboration that will definitely go a long way in improving access to essential services. The Civic centre is ideally located with great access to public transport services, such as the MyCiTi bus service, Station Deck minibus-taxi facility and Cape Town station at its doorstep and provides visitors with a safe and dignified environment for conducting their business. The Property Transactions Department of the City of Cape Town is busy in finalising the lease agreement.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth – Alderman James Vos stated that this intended property transaction demonstrates good governance in action. By optimising the property assets, they have ensured that the city-owned land and buildings are leveraged in a way that delivers the greatest possible benefit to communities, supporting economic activity and unlocking long-term value for residents.
Minister of Home Affairs – Dr. Leon Schreiber said that the establishment of a modern new Home Affairs office at the Cape Town Civic Centre, as an alternative to the busy office in Barrack Street demonstrates their commitment to deliver for the people of Cape Town. It also represents significant milestone in the implementation of the Home Affairs at home reforms, which are focused on bringing essential services closer to where people live.
According to Minister Schreiber, by locating the services in an accessible and well-connected public facility, they are making it easier for residents to access critical documentation in a safe, efficient and respectful environment. This partnership with the City of Cape Town reflects their commitment to work together to modernise service delivery and ensure that every person, regardless of where they live, can experience a reformed Home Affairs that delivers dignity for all.
