Cape Town: The city has closed Killarney Garden Waste facility temporarily for essential maintenance of the work. It also improved stormwater management and ensured safety and reliability of the facility, during the upcoming winter season.
Reportedly, the closure has begun, and the facility is expected to reopen on Wednesday, April 01, 2026.
Killarney Drop-off facility is temporarily closed for essential surface stabilisation work in the garden waste chipping section. The work is being undertaken proactively as the Urban Waste Management Directorate of the City of Cape Town prepares the facility for the upcoming winter rainfall season.
Stabilising the surface of the chipping area will improve stormwater management. It will also enhance operational safety and will help in ensuring continued service reliability during wet weather conditions.
The City of Cape Town requested the residents not to leave any waste outside the closed facility. Illegal dumping outside closed sites creates health and environmental risks and diverts resources away from essential service delivery.
Furthermore, alternative drop-off facilities are available. During the temporary closure, residents are encouraged to make use of the closest alternative drop-off facilities:
- Tygerdal
- Welgelegen
- Vissershok
Note that Vissershok does not accept e-waste. This should be taken to one of the other listed facilities. For a full list of City drop-off facilities, including operating hours and accepted materials, please consult the official drop-off table.
Considering this, the City of Cape Town thanked the residents for their patience and cooperation while this essential maintenance work is completed. These preventative measures will help in ensuring that the Killarney facility remains safe, accessible and fully operational during winter.
Killarney Garden Waste facility is used by residents with cars, trailers or LDV’s with a carrying capacity and exceeding 1.5 tons. A maximum of three loads of garage waste, builder’s rubble and clean garden waste can be dropped off per day. There is no limitation on the number of loads of recycling that can be dropped at the facility.
