Cape Town: Tafelsig Clinic will be upgraded. Construction will begin next week, as part of a broader R15 million investments in City Health facilities this financial year. The project includes the construction of a first-floor extension, the installation of a lift, new internal and external staircases, and various upgrades to the ground floor.
Reportedly, the construction work will be completed by October 2026. During this time, some services will temporarily move to the Thusong Centre and Tafelsig Community Day Centre (CDC).
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that this upgrade will help them in meeting the growing demand for services and will provide safer, more accessible care for residents. They anticipate that work will be completed by the end of October 2026. She thanked the affected communities for their patience and support during this time.
Tafelsig Clinic was opened in 1994 and became the site of the first City-run substance abuse outpatient treatment programme, using the Matrix treatment model, in 2008. During the construction period, clients will be able to access services at alternative facilities, including the Thusong Centre opposite the clinic.
Following services will be provided at the Thusong facility:
- Child Health services
- Curative services
- Immunisation
- Nutrition services
- Matrix Services
The Tafelsig Community Day Centre (CDC) will offer the following services:
- Adult Curative services
- Mental Health services
- BANC (Basic Antenatal Care)
- Reproductive Health services
- TB services
- HIV services
All pharmacy services will continue to be provided from the main pharmacy at Tafelsig CDC. Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) medicine parcels will be issued at the Thusong Centre.
The clinic will use the appointment system to reduce congestion, prioritise youth services on Monday to Fridays at 02:00 p.m. to 04:30 p.m. Stable chronic patients will receive four and six-month medication supplies.
City Health is also undertaking roof replacement projects at four Khayelitsha clinics to the value of nearly R4.5 million. The work at the Luvuyo, Mayenzeke, Site-C and Town Two clinics, is set to be completed by the end of the financial year in June.
Higham stated that these projects form part of the City’s broader programme to maintain and improve health infrastructure, ensuring safer, more efficient facilities for both staff and the communities they serve.
