Cape Town: The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town is making progress in its reinstatement work on pavements, driveways and road curbs following urgent water infrastructure repairs.
The reinstatement project delivered more than 500 repairs in total 60 days and the contractors completed 521 trench reinstatements across various areas, between December 2024 and January 2025.
Reportedly, the Water and Sanitation team of the city has reinstated the damaged streets and pavements across the metro in just two months. This marked a significant progress in the reinstatement turnaround strategy of the city, launched last November in 2024.

The contractors completed 521 trench reinstatements following the essential water infrastructure repairs between December and January by bringing welcome relief to affect the communities.
The reinvestment strategy is backed by an ambitious R55 million investment and is now operating at full capacity with the teams simultaneously, restoring 4000msq. of streets, pavements and driveways across multiple neighbourhoods.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water and Sanitation – Councillor Zahid Badroodien said that they acknowledged the delay in reinstatements that has caused a significant backlog. They have also faced initial challenges with reinstatement works stemming from water repairs.

The teams are now working across the city with the additional aim to increase the reinstatement capacity. There are initial challenges that occur with every new strategy and they are overcoming them to improve the efficiency.
They recognised the inconvenience and delays caused these days. The completion of timelines varies and are based on trench size, complexity and project volume. The contractors are working diligently to expedite restorations and they sincerely appreciate the patience of the resident and understanding as they navigate the process.
The new strategy represents a fundamental shift in the approach by the City of Cape Town to reinstatements that allowed for parallel work packages rather than sequential repairs. At that given time, at least four separate 1000 msq. restoration projects are underway across different regions of the metro.
