Zambia: Government of Eastern Province handed over 200 mattresses to the Chama South Boarding School. The mattresses were procured using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) of the government,
The CDF has helped many communities get access to crucial facilities that are needed for the overall development of the community. The government has constructed a variety of structures, schools, ablution blocks, market shelters across Zambia through CDF.
Eastern Province Minister, Peter Phiri delivered a brief address at the handover ceremony of the mattresses. He said that the new mattresses will greatly address the shortage of the same at the school.
He said government is committed to strengthening the Constituency Development Fund of the government. He acknowledged that the fund continues to serve as an engine for steering development at grassroots level.
Meanwhile, 245 pupils under the secondary school bursaries and 164 students under the skills development component of 2024 Constituency Development Fund in Chama South were also awarded bursaries.
Minister Phiri noted that the increased number of beneficiaries on CDF bursary scheme will help in reducing the rates of illiteracy. He highlighted that the district has been struggling with the high illiteracy levels in the district.
Meanwhile, Chama District Education Board Secretary, Harrison Phiri said the procurement of the mattresses is timely. Further, Phiri stated that the introduction of free education by the government is another milestone in the education sector.
Through the project, the government has been working hard to give the people access to quality education to all the youngsters.
“As the District Education Board Secretary I am delighted that you have taken keen interest in bringing development to Chama district,” he said.
Further, the School Head teacher, John Phiri said the mattresses will go a long way in providing a conducive environment to learners.
The school head teacher also appealed to government to help the school with a light truck to be used for procuring food and non-food items for the school.
He also said students at the Chama South Boarding School were facing challenges in accessing basic health services. This is because the nearest health facility of the district due to the long distance to the nearest health facility.
