Chief’s Climate Action Day launched in Kiambu County

Kenya: The Principal Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Administration Raymond Omollo has presided over the launch of the Chief’s Climate Action Day. The event was hosted on Monday, in the presence of several stakeholders of the Kenya Forest Service.

The event was hosted at the Ondiri Wetland in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. The Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo was accompanied by the Chief Conservator of Forests, Alex Lemarkoko.

The Chief’s Climate Action Day is an initiative by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration. The aim of the day long festivities is to help in the implementation of the 15 billion tree growing campaign.

The members of the community have shared that the members by involving chiefs and assistant chiefs in the initiative. The members of the community have also pledged their support to the campaign which seeks to restore the forest cover of Kenya.

The Principal Secretary delivered a brief address at the event. He highlighted the importance of local administrators. He said that they are responsible for interacting with the local community on a daily basis as agents of driving the campaign.

He also encouraged the chiefs to continue with coordination of climate action plans that will drive the 15 billion trees program.

Meanwhile, CCF Alex also delivered brief address at the  Chief’s Climate Action Day. He highlighted that Kenya Forest Service will continue to collaborate with the National Government Administration to grow trees.

He promised to continue providing the technical backstopping at both county and sub -county levels. Th CCF has asked the officers to use the Jaza Miti App to help in recording the progress of their tree growing activities. The app will help in collection of the data and monitoring of planted sites.

The Kenya Forest Service planted and distributed 10,000 fruit seedlings to local residents during the event. At the same Principal Secretary and Chief Conservator of Forests also awarded certificates to best performing administration officers. The aim of the certificate presentation was to honor the officers for their outstanding work.

County Commissioner Henry Wafula, Kiambu CFC, Peter Nganga and the area MCA were present at the Chief’s Climate Action Day.
