Kenya: Nanjing Port delegation from China has concluded their official tour to Kenya with a visit to the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Nairobi. They reinforced efforts to deepen cooperation between the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and one of China’s leading inland ports.
The delegation was led by the General Manager of Nanjing Port – Zhang Chuanping. He toured the ICD Nairobi facility and commended the continued investment of KPA in expanding port infrastructure and improving operational efficiency. Their visit marked the final part of the delegation’s engagements in Kenya, following their earlier high-level discussions in Mombasa.
During their visit, General Manager Chuanping announced plans to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nanjing Port and KPA to strengthen collaboration in key areas, such as:
- Capacity Building
- Safety
- Digital Transformation
- Automation of Port Operations
- Development of Modern Port Infrastructure
Chuanping affirmed commitment of Nanjing Port to support the ongoing modernisation initiatives of KPA at the Port of Mombasa and Lamu Port. This descried their visit as an important milestone in fostering stronger institutional ties between the two ports.
He stated that this visit has been very productive and they are looking forward to enhance their collaboration in the future. They are willing to support growth of Port of Mombasa and Lamu Port through their strong relationship that exists between China and Kenya.
Therefore, the Nairobi visit also observed discussions earlier this week, between the delegations and Managing Director of KPA – Capt. William Ruto in Mombasa. During the meeting, both parties explored opportunities to enhance cooperation in port automation, technology adoption and operational excellence.
The discussions held were focused mainly on potential support for major infrastructure projects undertaken by KPA. These projects include Dongo Kundu Phase-1 and the development of Berth-19B which are expected to boost capacity and efficiency of Port of Mombasa.
This planned partnership is expected to facilitate the exchange of technical expertise and best practices while accelerating transformation agenda of KPA that aims at enhancing competitiveness by improving cargo handling efficiency and strengthening position of Kenya as a regional maritime and logistics hub.
Nanjing Port is recognised as one of the world’s leading inland ports and is renowned for its expertise in port equipment manufacturing, installation and maintenance. The port is targeting to handle over four (04) million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) this year. This will further reflect its significant role in global logistics and maritime trade.
