Malawi: The Government of Malawi has announced the plans to construct a high security Chitedze multi-complex security prison. The officials have shared that the contract for the construction project will be given to the Hualong Construction PVT Limited.
The construction for the high security prison will be completed under a budget of a K74 billion. The construction for the Chitedze multi-complex security prison in Lilongwe has been in the works for several months.
Minister of Homeland Security, Ezekiel Ching’oma has made the announcement during an interview with the media. The Minister highlighted that , “As soon as the contractor signs the contract, we expect them to be on site.”
National Prison Service spokesperson Charles Meke also shared his views on the construction of this new facility. According to the officials, the new facility will reduce congestion in the country’s prisons.
The National Prison Service officer has shared that the reformation will be easier for the new facilities. Further, the new prison will be equipped with the necessary equipment for vocational and other skills.
The facility will help in making sure that the inmates can be reformed for the benefit of the people.
Center for Human Rights Education and Advice (CHREAA), which is a non-governmental organisation has also supported the construction. The organization has been dedicated to fighting for the rights of the underprivileged.
CHREAA Executive Director, Victor Mhango, hoped the country would have an ideal correctional facility. The aim of the construction is to make sure that the inmates can not only remain safe but also lead a productive life.
“We have to get away from mere punishing of prisoners to provision of corrective measures to transform citizens,” he added.
Furthermore, Chitedze multi complex security prison will consist of a multi-complex male maximum security complex. Other facilities within the multi complex facility will be a dedicated female maximum security complex.
The administrative offices, courtyard/semi-public car parking, among other facilities will also be welcomed by the people.
The notice to award the contract was placed in newspapers on April 7, 2025.
