Malawi: A 20-year-old man in Chitipa has committed suicide after his girlfriend broke up with him. The incident happened on Wednesday sometime after he retired to his bed after dinner.
The deceased has been identified as Justin Mulungu, a resident of Reuben Village in the area of Senior Chief Mwenemisuku in the district. He was a form four student at Kalenge Community Day Secondary School in the district.
The brother of the deceased found his body hanging in the boys quarters where he had gone to sleep the previous night. The Assistant Public Relations Officer for Chitipa Police, Mathews Bright Mfune shared the details of the incident.
On the day of the death of the victim by suicide, he had gone to his school and returned in the evening. He then joined the rest of the family for his dinner before retiring to bed.
The next morning, the parents of the 20 year old could not find him In the house and assumed that the had gone to school. However, the victim was found by his brother a few hours later, hanging by the roof of his quarters.
“In the afternoon at around 14:15 hours, Mulungu was discovered hanging from a roof of the quarters by his younger brother,” Mfune explained.
The Assistant Public Relations Officer for Chitipa Police revealed that the authorities had conducted a post mortem for the victim at the scene. As per the results, Mulungu died due to suffocation. The police official also added that they suspected no foul play involved in the incident.
The Police officer also noted that they found a suicide note in the room where the deceased informed the family about his breakup. As per the note, his long term girlfriend had broken up with him, which drove him towards suicide.
Depression comes across as one of the major reasons for the incident to happen. Accordingly,
Mfune asked people with depression to seek counselling and psycho-social support at police’s victim support unit rather than taking their own lives.
