Cape Town: Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas on Monday, March 17, 2025 with the project team visited the site at Govan Mbeki and Klipfontein Road where the new Duinefontein Bridge is being built.
An enormous pre-cast beams has been produced by a local company for the new bridge, that were transported via abnormal road vehicles to the intersection of Duinefontein and Govan Mbeki Roads in Manenberg, and took four days in total.
Rob Quintas further added that, it was quite exciting to witness the delivery of these large concrete beams for the new Duinefontein Bridge between Philippi and Manenberg. The concrete beams weigh up to 40 tons and are approx. 36m in length.
The abnormal load was transported to the site and the beams are being piled on the western side of the Duinefontein Road intersection. The new bridge is part of the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service to provide commuters from Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and various other communities across the metro-south east with scheduled public transport.
The metro-south east MyCiTi expansion is the biggest financial investment in public transport by any metro to date. As per Quintas, they are working non-stop to improve the public transport service offered to Capetonians.
Benefits of the new bridge will be worth the wait when they have dedicated bus rapid transport lanes overhead and out of mixed traffic to keep Cape Town moving. It will ensure commuters to get to their destinations quicker as more efficiently and more affordably.
Rob Quintas explained that they understand the current construction which is disruptive and they aim to work as quickly as possible. This short-term frustration is undeniable and the long-term benefits will be worth it.
With the expansion of the MyCiTi service footprint, the City of Cape Town is making public transport more accessible, convenient, affordable, reliable and safe. They are committed to these goals, as improved mobility means improved productivity, ore jobs, economic growth, better lives and futures for all of us, added Quintas.
