Cape Town: The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town is inviting the public to comment on the feasibility of using an external service delivery mechanism to implement and operate the Faure New Water Scheme. The comment period will be observed for one month, that began on Monday, Mar 17, 2025 and will run until Thursday, Apr 17, 2025.
The City of Cape Town is encouraging public comment on the option of using a suitable external service delivery mechanism to implement and operate the proposed Faure New Water Scheme, that will be located at the existing Faure Water Treatment Plant.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water and Sanitation – Councillor Zahid Badroodien said that it is crucial that Cape Town has become less dependent on unpredictable rain-fed dams.
Considering this reason, the water reuse was made a part of multi-pronged action plan of Cape Town, that will help in building Cape Town water resilient against climate shocks as well as to supply the demand for a growing population.
As per Badroodien, the City of Cape Town is a designated water services provider, which is responsible for the production of drinking water supply and maintenance of the system in Cape Town.
He stated that due to the advanced process system of the Faure New Water Scheme, it may be more suitable to sign a contract with an external company to provide services for this project. He added that they would like to give the public a fair chance to assess the information available and provide valuable input on these matters.
Also, the residents and stakeholders can submit their comments until Apr 17, 2025. All the feedback will be considered and incorporated in the feasibility study report, which will be made available for public comment before it is submitted to Council for approval.
Furthermore, it is a call for public participation on the latest developments on water reuse, that opens at a significant milestone. Currently, Cape Town is co-hosting the 14th International Water Association (IWA) Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse, that is taking place from March 16 to 20, 2025 at the CTICC.
IWA Conference is a prestigious global event that brought together the water experts, policymakers, academics and industry leaders, to discuss cutting-edge advancements in water reuse practices and sustainable water management.
Notably, the City of Cape Town is making efforts to explore alternative water supply solutions that aligns closely with the themes of the conference, and is reinforcing the international position of Cape Town in water innovation and resilience.
