Botswana: The Commissioner of Police in Botswana, Dinah Marathe recently addressed Police officers in the Kanye and Mochudi for a critical meeting. The meeting was hosted with the aim of educating the force about the importance of police presence within communities
The Commissioner of Police believes that the presence of police in the various parts of the nation will help in developing trust within the people. The constant presence of the police officials will also dissuade crime within the community.
Thus, the people of the communities can become more productive as a unit. The commissioner highlighted that with the increased presence of police, the people will also feel safer in their homes.
Criminal activities may also drastically decrease with the initiative to increase police presence and patrolling efforts. Accordingly, the commissioner called it imperative to for officers to regularly go on patrols and meet and greet the community.
According to Commissioner Dinah Marathe the efforts of the team will build a sense of security and deterrence among the community. To justify her point, she recollected the words of Sir Robert Peel. The renowned philosopher noted that “The Police are the people, and the people are the Police”.
Commissioner Marathe announced that Police Officers must find space for the larger community to contribute with their resources and ideas. “In this manner, I can assure you, we will leverage on the multiplier effect of such an approach,” she said.
She assured me that the organization would never compromise on its services, even in the face of the most incredible adversity. She claimed that this is the essence of professional policing.
Notably, Marathe has embarked on a country-wide tour of Police Establishments to familiarise herself with current operations. She was recently appointed as the Commissioner of Police.
She is working with all the establishments under her charge on how best the Botswana Police Service (BPS) could serve the people and the country.
Acting Divisional Commander, South Central, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tamapo Nthoiwa, supported the words of the Commissioner. He also highlighted the need for the 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 be heard louder if Batswana are to have confidence in the BPS.
Finally, the Acting Divisional Commander said police officers should always serve the people with dignity and respect.
