Egypts shows concern over Somalia to counter Turkey’s growing influence: Reports

Egypt has shown its concern over Somalia to counter Turkey’s growing influence. Egypt is already working hard to influence Somalia and support its government to solve its disputes to counterbalance the Turkish and Ethiopian presence in Mogadishu.

In December 2021, the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized their first capacity-building training session for Somalis in dialogue, along with negotiation and mediation, with 17 officials from numerous Somali ministers and parties.

As per said by Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, ‘Sherif Issa’, “during the inauguration of the session’s on Dec 11, the session comes as a part of Egyptian efforts to support the Somali State; Egypt is supporting Somalia to achieve national reconciliation, fight terrorism and building peace.”

According to Mohammed Abdul Qadir Mahmoud, the Somali Ministry advisor, ” the training sessions always focused on dialogue, solving disputes, negotiation mechanism with opponent parties and to prevent violence.”

Egypt has recently shown a clear interest in supporting Somalia across all political, economic, and security sectors.

Last year, the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources trained 22 people from Somalia to preserve and expand water aids.

Even in 2018, Egypt opened a two-megawatt solar plant in Somalia.

Egypt’s interest in Somalia provoked Somali Prime Miniter Mohamed Roble to visit Cairo last year, where he agreed with the Egypt counterpart Mustafa Madbouly to double the number of scholarships in Egypt and grated it to 400 per year. During the visit, Madbouly was also certified to meet the Somali side’s requirement for medical convoys, medication and other supplies and to increase Egyptian support for Somalia.
