Ethiopia: Coffee exports from Ethiopia have reached a historic milestone of $3 billion for the first time. This achievement is gained due to coordinated efforts across the coffee value chain that includes farmers, exporters, cooperatives, investors and government support.
Coffee export revenues have shown steady growth that rose from $1.4 billion in 2023 to $3 billion in the current fiscal year. The government has contributed to this growth by focusing mainly on local processing, quality control, traceability and certification to meet global demand for premium coffee.
This impressive surge in earnings came as a direct result of coordinated efforts across the entire agricultural supply chain.
Key Drivers Behind the Achievement
Productivity & Quality: Targeted government and private sector strategies have focused heavily on boosting farm productivity, traceability and premium quality standards.
Market Expansion: High global demand for Ethiopian specialty coffee, alongside significant volume increases in rapidly expanding markets like China, that helped driving up overall export quantities.
Value Addition: An increased push towards local processing and certification has allowed the country to capture more value from its exports rather than relying solely on raw beans.

Significant Trade Between Ethiopia and Russia
In February 2026, it was reported that coffee exports constituted a significant portion of the $435 million trade between Russia and Ethiopia in 2025, alongside textiles and flowers. According to the Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia – Evgeny Terekhin, Ethiopia’s coffee exports to Russia rose from about $46 million in 2024 to an inflation that adjusted $123 million in 2025.
Notably, the import volumes doubled over the same period, climbing from 8,300 tonnes to approximately 18,300 tonnes. The current administration of the country contributed to the growth of the coffee trade by prioritising local coffee processing to capture greater value before export.
