Botswana: Gaborone City Council has commemorated the World Environment Day together with Orange Botswana. The City Council asked the members of the community to come together and participate in a clean-up campaign.
The cleanup campaign was hosted around Maruapula and planting of trees along Chuma Drive and Segoditshane Way. Orange Botswana has donated 100 trees through their Corporate Social Responsibility drive.
The Mayor of Gaborone, Austin Abraham delivered a brief address at the campaign and applauded Orange Botswana. He was happy that the organization had decided to partner with the city council for the initiative.
He highlighted that the partnership shows the company’s commitment in promoting environmental sustainability and conservation. The Mayor said the initiative does not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also enhance the city’s general outlook.
He noted that the trees which would be planted as a part of the World Environment Day celebration will help in beautifying the surrounding. He added that the planted trees also presents a desired sight for both visitors and residents of Gaborone City.
The Mayor also urged the public especially those engaged in business of selling trees to also find a way to conserve and sell indigenous trees. He aimed to encourage them to avoid their depletion. He stated that growing of indigenous trees will help preserve them.
The City Council has been working hard to clean up and beautify the capital of Botswana with road landscaping, community cleanup campaigns and more. Orange Botswana Acting Chief Executive Officer Yves Famien expressed gratitude to Gaborone City Council for the support and approval of their initiative.
Famien stressed that the support from City Council made it possible for his company to celebrate World Environment Day in a meaningful and impactful manner.
He pointed out that environmental degradation and pollution are concerns that need to be attended to. Famien added that it is imperative to take concrete actions to preserve and protect natural surroundings.
Orange Botswana also donated some of the cleaning equipment to Maruapula Ward Development Committee.
