Botswana: The Gaborone City Deputy Mayor Mankie Sekete participated in a 10km walk on Saturday. The walk was hosted in support of the women suffering from Endometriosis. The images from the event have been shared by the Gaborone City Council.
The event sought to show the administration’s support to the women who have been struggling with this condition. The hormonal and reproduction related health issues are not often given the same level of attention as the other disorders.
As such, it is critical for the leadership of the country to take the lead on bringing the issue to light and fighting to make society aware. The health issues affecting the women are often heavily stigmatised and accordingly not addressed properly.
The officials have shared that the walk was organized by the Botswana Endometriosis Foundation. The foundation wanted to the use this initiative as a way of sensitizing and supporting women affected by condition.
Since the deputy Mayor of Gaborone City Council is a woman, she was delighted to participate in the walk for this cause.
The Deputy Mayor of encouraged women to speak up about issues affecting them. She also noted that the women should not be embarrassed for speaking about the issues that they are facing. The Deputy Mayor noted that conditions such as endometriosis are still facing the stigmatized status. As such it is very difficult for some women to be good role models and come out to speak about them.
The mayor has confirmed that the community needs to learn about conditions such as this endometriosis as it will help in a confident and proud girl.
The Deputy Mayor has promised to support the Botswana Endometriosis Foundation in their mandates. They have urged the government of Botswana to do more in supporting women who have been struggling with the issue of endometriosis. This is because it is a very scarcely discussed topic in the community.
The women have to work together to raise awareness in their families, communities and the nation at large.
