Malawi: Police in Phalombe have arrested a 75-year-old man from Waluma Village in Traditional Authority Mkhumba. The suspect has been identified as Geoffrey Kaduya and he was found in possession of assorted medical drugs.
The suspect was allegedly selling the drugs illegally without a permit for the business out of his home
The suspect without a permit and operating a clinic without a licence. The police force got the news of the suspect’s criminal offense through an anonymous tip. The Phalombe Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Jimmy Kapanja spoke to the media regarding the development.
He said that on July 25, 2024, detectives received a tip that the suspect was operating an illegal business at his house. After the tip, the police officers made a follow up on the information they had received.
The officials have shared that the follow up allowed the officials to make the arrest. At the time of the arrest, discovery of a large volume of assorted medical drugs in the house.
“Some of the medical drugs that were found with the suspect are; Bactrim, metrodazole, Artmether Lumefantrim, capsules of amoxicillin, erythromycin, fragile, tablets of bufen, malaria rapid test and many more
“We have seized the drugs and arrested the suspect who will soon appear in court to answer charges levelled against him,” he said.
Meanwhile, investigations are still in progress to find the source of the medical drugs. The police officials all over Malawi have been finding and seizing illegal hospital and medicine businesses.
The businesses, which are running without a permit and below the radar of the healthcare fraternity of the nation can significantly hurt the people. The officials have shared that they are trying to trace all the businesses operating illegally.
The people of the traditional authority are at risk of consuming dangerous drugs and get treated by untrained officials as long as the illegal businesses continue to operate in the community.
