Zambia: A 47-year-old theater male nurse at Kaoma District Hospital has allegedly committed suicide. He committed the act by injecting himself with a painkiller that is used in operation theaters.
The victim who has been identified as Naphy Banda intentionally overdosed on the painkiller. He was a resident of the Mulamba Compound in Kaoma district.
Western Province Commissioner of Police, Mukuka Chileshe confirmed the incident in a statement to  the media on Tuesday. He also shared a number of details regarding the incident in the same media statement
According to Police Commissioner Chileshe, the deceased was discovered dead in the hospital’s theater department. The colleagues of the victim, who were attending to another patient in another patient room found him at around 20:00 hours on Saturday.
The police officers have started a preliminary investigation into the incident. The preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased injected himself with Lignocaine medication.
It was confirmed that the pain killer commonly in question is commonly used in operating theaters. The victim later died due to the affects of the medication.
Commissioner Chileshe stated that further investigations revealed that the deceased was having marital disputes. The discovery has led to the officials believing that his situation at home could have led to him committing suicide.
The colleagues of the victim found the body however, they confirmed that they did not see any physical injuries on the body of the person. Meanwhile, they a used needle and bottles of diazepam and Lignocaine near the deceased body.
Further, the colleagues reached out to the officers with the report of the suicide. The Police officers visited the scene and found the deceased lying on the hospital bed. His body was facing upwards and no injuries on the person.
The officers noted that there were blood stains on the floor near the dead body Further, they found some chemicals left on the table,” he explained.
According to the health personnel, Lignocaine chemical if inserted into the vein can kill a person while the Diazepam chemical can make a person go to sleep.
The body has been deposited at the Kaoma District Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
