Zambia: Some persons with disabilities in Kaputa district in Northern Province have applauded the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for distributing relief maize. The distributed food was given to the vulnerable households in the area to help them get access to food.
The DMMU has been helping many families across the nation get access to essential food supplies go to the families who can not afford essentials.
The persons living with disabilities will be given a priority in the distribution exercise. The authorities have shared that they have reserve a part of the total number for the people who are living with disabilities.
Belina Chilombo, who is one of the beneficiaries of the relief maize donations, said the distribution has made a significant difference in the lives of people.
Ms Chilombo with these remarks during a media interaction shortly after receiving the relief maize. The beneficiary extended her sincere gratitude to the members of the administration who have made the donation possible.
“We are very grateful to the government for thinking of us; this maize has come at the right time. Most of us had nothing left in our homes.” Said the beneficiary, Chilombo.
Furthermore, Kaputa District Disaster Management Coordinator Chundu Habulembe also confirmed that the distribution exercise was done in the district.
Officer Habulembe said each beneficiary is receiving one 50kg bag of relief maize to help cushion food security in households. The food insecurity was brought along by the droughts in the country over the last year. However, the situation continues to be hard for several households in the country. The officials have shared that it is important
He explained that the donation exercise has reserved 20 percent of the total number of bags to households with persons with disability. On the other hand the rest of the donation will be done under the Food for Work arrangement.
“We received a total of 73 metric tonnes of white maize, or 1,460 by 50kg bags, from DMMU,” said Mr Habulembe.
