Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on Friday, July 24, 2026 received top honours at the Kisumu National Show after winning eight first-place trophies in recognition of its role in transforming Kenya’s transport and logistics network which facilitated international trade and promoted exports.
The awards were presented by Kisumu Deputy Governor – Dr. Mathew Ochieng Owili during the annual agricultural exhibition at the Mamboleo Showground. There KPA showcased ongoing investments at the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu Port, Inland Container Depots (ICDs), and the Lake Victoria port and pier network.
The trophies were received by KPA Show Committee Chairman – Peter Odera on behalf of Chief Executive Officer – Capt. William Ruto.
KPA emerged the overall winner in the categories of Viable Transport, Strategies for International Trade and Exports, Environment, Blue Economy, Show Theme Interpretation, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Community Service Initiatives and Large Trade Stand. The Authority also secured second place in the categories of National Cohesion and Integration, Youth Activities and Non-Agricultural Based Statutory Board.
The recognition came as the Port of Kisumu continues to strengthen its position as a key regional logistics hub on Lake Victoria. The port has recorded 144 vessel calls so far this year, that reflected growing confidence in the facility and increasing demand for lake transport services.
Uganda remained the leading transit market through the Port of Kisumu, with petroleum products, ceramic tiles and other general cargo accounting for much of the traffic. The port has also handled heavy machinery destined for Tanzania for industrial and infrastructure projects, which highlighted its expanding role in supporting trade across the East African Community.
In June 2026, the port handled 21 vessel calls and processed 42,359 metric tonnes of export cargo, comprising petroleum products, ceramic tiles, hot rolled coils, fertiliser and heavy machinery. Export volumes increased by 2,094 metric tonnes compared with May 2026.
Earlier in the day, KPA Directors – Beatrice Nyamoita and Cheryl Majiwa, represented the Ministry of Transport and the National Treasury respectively. They visited the Authority’s exhibition stand and interacted with staff who showcased KPA’s infrastructure development programmes and regional trade initiatives
