Kenya: Managing Director of Kenya Ports Authority – Capt. William Ruto lauded indoor sports team for their strong regional and continental performances.
Reportedly, the KPA MD commended the teams reaffirming the commitment of authority towards sports and community development as an important pillar of the business strategy.
Speaking during a meeting with KPA’s volleyball and basketball teams led by the Manager Administration – Catherine Wangari, Capt. Ruto said that excellence at the port must be matched by excellence on the court, describing about their sport as a form of soft power that projects KPA’s values beyond trade and logistics.
Ruto said that just as they pursue world-class standards in port performance, let’s apply the same ambition to sports. As they are not settling for less and KPA must win. The meeting was observed a day after the Managing Director announced KPA’s record-breaking cargo performance report for 2025.
This time, the focus shifted indoors, to athletes who were also representing Kenya on regional and international stages.
Furthermore, KPA women’s basketball team were crowned league champions, while the men’s team finished runners-up ahead of the new season set to tip off in February. The women were also praised for their recent FIBA performances, including heroics on the continental stage.
The KPA men’s volleyball team also finished runners-up in the league, while both volleyball and basketball squads recorded notable performances in the local league.
Ruto also acknowledged the presence of East and West African professional players noting that KPA is scaling it’s reach beyond the traditional markets of Eastern Africa as a deliberate tactical strategy.
He added that some of them come from this region. They are carrying the region along with them, the country and the KPA badge. He said sports development aligns with KPA’s broader business strategy, alongside port efficiency and trade facilitation, adding that underperforming structures would not be protected.
MD William Ruto confirmed the disbandment of the KPA football committee due to poor results, saying performance is not sentiment, it would guide decisions. He said that KPA is known to be attractive. They have everything it takes to scout for the best.
He said, “I know you are the best, but the reality is we must keep raising the bar.”
The MD assured athletes of full institutional backing, placing player welfare at the centre of his leadership agenda.
Ruto said that when he makes a promise, one should know that he always delivers because of importance to me is your welfare. Therefore, he has committed himself to fully support them.
He challenged volleyball teams to improve results going forward, reiterating that silverware, not participation, remains the benchmark. He emphasised that as KPA, they should perform at the port. They must also perform in sport.
