The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education attended the Sports and Recreation Stakeholder Governance Workshop. During the workshop, the department expressed their commitment to strengthening governance, accountability and inclusive transformation in school sport.
The workshop was hosted with the aim of highlighting the strategic importance of developing athletes from grassroots level through structured pathways. The organisation shared that the department is working while ensuring that talented athletes receive appropriate high-performance support.
The workshop also served as the opportunity to conduct discussions on Project 350. These discussions highlight the need for the department to conduct evidence-based athlete selection.
The department also highlighted sports science and medical support, high-performance training, equipment, nutrition and assistance with participation in key competitions. These initiatives serve as part of the pathway towards major international events, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
During the workshop, a key concern was raised which was the growing involvement of unregulated sports tour agencies in school sport. Stakeholders cautioned against costly international tours that place significant financial pressure on families while bypassing recognised sporting structures and established athlete development pathways.
The workshop called on the stakeholders for stronger governance measures, including the vetting of international sporting opportunities, improved coordination between schools, districts, provincial departments and recognised sporting federations, and greater accountability from all stakeholders.
“Our priority must remain the development of sustainable sporting pathways that give every learner an opportunity to participate, develop and reach their potential, regardless of whether they come from a well-resourced or under-resourced school,” stakeholders emphasised.
The session further reinforced the importance of collaboration between the Department of Education, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, sporting federations, coaches, schools and other stakeholders in strengthening grassroots sport, identifying talent and building competitive provincial squads.
The discussions will inform consolidated implementation plans and resolutions aimed at improving governance, athlete development and inclusive access to sport across KwaZulu-Natal.
