Botswana: Botswanan athlete, Letsile Tebogo has created history with the first gold medal for the country in the Paris Olympics 2024. The athlete has won the first individual gold medal for his nation in the men’s 200m event.

He also broke his own personal best and the He additionally breaks the Area Record he set in July 2023 of 19.50 to 19.46.

His victory in the 200 meter event ends Botswana’s medal drought at the current games. He brings Botswana’s 2nd individual medal at the Olympic Games overall.

The achievement of Letsile Tebogo has a wider significance for the whole continent as Tebogo is the first athlete from the continent who has secured a medal in the men’s 200m Olympic event.

After winning the gold medal, the nation has ben propelled to the 54th position in the Olympics medal table. The officials from all over the continent have shared their best wishes to the athlete.

Officials of Botswana, Minister of Youth Affairs, Sports et al, Tumiso M Rakgare and President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi EK Masisi congratulated the athlete. Both the leaders took to their social media account to applaud the achievement of the athelete.

The minister of Sports delivered a brief address commemorating the biggest achievement of Botswana in Paris Olympics 2024. He said, that he has never been more proud to be called a Motswana.

He said, The calls, messages and social media posts that are continuing to come from all over the nation. The calls came from both the young and old, from people of different religious beliefs and political affiliations.

The officials have shared that  people in Botswana, African continent, and beyond are extremely proud of the athlete. The celebratory mood is contagious and continues.

He further said, “We have never doubted our athletes’ talent, dedication and perseverance.” He also said they have known for a long time that there was something special and unique about our current cohort of athletes.

The Minister confessed that the people in the nation had been hoping for a gold medal from Paris in hushed tones. According to the politician, they were expecting it to come as a surprise to many knowing how difficult it is to win an Olympic Gold medal.
