Lusaka: 41 arrested for drugs and disorder in Bus Terminals Cleanup

Lusaka, South Africa: Forty One (41) people have been apprehended during a joint clean up operation conducted in Lusaka’s Intercity Bus terminals area on December 6th, 2023 rd.

The 41 includes three females and 38 males who were found illegally trading in the area. Out of this number, 31 were Junkies picked for Idle and disorderly conduct, eight were picked up for illicit trading without proper trading licences and 2 for illicit drug related offences.

This operation follows numerous reports from the members of the public in the area that have been inconvenienced by reported disorderly conduct in the area, and our own joint investigations that confirmed these reports.

The operation, which was conducted by the Zambia Police Service, the Drug Enforcement Commission and Lusaka City Council started at 09:00hrs hours and ended at 11:30hours.

The officers picked up assorted alcohol substances, Drugs including Cannabis, suspected narcotics and cocaine. All illegal structures in the area have since been demolished.

Investigations have been instituted, and security officers have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. All suspects shall be detained in Police custody, waiting to be formally charged.

This clean up operation is in line with the inter agency framework agreement among law enforcement agencies to curb organised crime in the country.

Residents are satisfied with the initiative of the Zambia Police government; one of the residents said, “Kudos to our law enforcement agencies. We don’t want that lawlessness and impunity where cadres to inconvenience innocent members of the public like that which suffered for seven years preceding August 2021.”

Some residents also demanded the back of the security checkpoint in which one of the users said, “Please can you bring back our security checkpoint, we are not safe.”

“Good move. Thugs should not be allowed to grow their stupid roots” there, said another user.
