South Africa: The premier of Free State Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae officially handed over the construction project for the 41-kilometer road between Excelsior and Tweespruit. The premier was accompanied by the MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport Jabu Mbalula at the event.
The road construction project in Mantsopa Municipality was handed over to a newly appointed contractor on Friday, 1 November 2024.
This project was re-launched after the previous contractor that they had enlisted, abandoned the site. MEC Mbalula explained the reason for the delay in the road project and the need for relocation. The officials have shared that the contract with the previous contractor was terminated due to poor workmanship.,

He further explained, “In this case, there was consistent interaction between the project leader and the contractor. The contractor was repeatedly informed of the department’s dissatisfaction on the lack of progress.”
“Despite being given chances to rectify the issues, the contractor failed to meet our expectations. We are constitutionally obligated to prevent government resources from being wasted, and this led us to terminate the contract,” MEC Mbalula said.
The department shared that the new project contractor is already on site. They also added that the project has created 652 job opportunities for local residents and engaged 22 subcontractors. The project, valued at R48 million, is scheduled for completion by July 2026.
Premier Letsoha-Mathae addressed the community, emphasizing the project’s significant impact on local livelihoods. She highlighted that the new road would improve access for ambulances, public transport, and businesses, providing an economic boost for the small town.
The Premier of Free State Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae urged the contractors to prioritize individuals from farms and vulnerable households, ensuring equitable benefits. She also reassured the community of Mahlatswetsa of her commitment to resolving housing issues, pledging to return with the MEC for Human Settlements to address the matter.
