Malawi: Mchinji District has emerged as the top district in the country to take steps to tackle malaria. The preventive efforts and initiatives of the district have also topped Ntcheu and Karonga districts.
The honor of being the top performer was given to Mchinji during the commemoration of the 2024 World Malaria Day. The event was hosted at Ntchisi on Thursday.
Programme Manager of the National Malaria Control Programme, Dr Lumbani Munthali appreciated the districts for the outstanding performance.
“The criteria for choosing the best district included the observation of how the district managed these cases. The issue includes the unavailability of discrepancies in Malaria medicine given and the cases registered, provision of commodities like SP to expectant mothers, and sending of reports to Ministry of Health about management of Malaria, among others.
“Under these measures, Ntcheu and Karonga and Mchinji districts performed exceptionally well,” said Munthali.
Director of Health and Social Services for Mchinji, Dr Yohane Mwale delivered his brief remarks at the event. In his address, he expressed gratitude upon winning as the best district to fight the vector borne disease for the benefit of the country.
He was extremely happy to have this honor and has pledged to support the initiatives to continue to perform well in the future. The fight against Malaria will not only help the people get better access to healthcare. They will also help in saving countless lives from the infection.
He noted that the honor means a lot to the district administration. “It is a testimony of our hard work, dedication and team spirit that has always existed in the fight against Malaria,” said Mwale.
The awards for the initiative of fighting malaria is will serve as an important part in the goal of eliminating malaria by 2030. The initiative has been outlined in the Malaria Strategy will run from 2023 to 2030.
This strategic plan has been made in collaboration with partners, outlines a number of interventions. They are aimed at curbing the spread of malaria and reducing its devastating impact on communities.
