South Africa: The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC, Fezeka Nkomonye, will, today, 11 August 2022, announce some of the sporting legends that will be honoured by the province when the department holds Sports awards in Gqeberha next week.
The awards will recognise and celebrate individuals, federations and teams that have excelled both on and off the field for the period between 1 June 2020 and 30 June 2022.
The legends include Loyiso Mtya and Matinise Toni, among others. Tsomo-born administrator Lux September, who has recently been appointed and tasked with a turn-around of CAF TV and its media rights, will also be honoured for his contribution to football.
Zolani Tete, Akhona Makhalima, Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe and Kaunda Ntunja will also be honoured with these prestigious awards.
Nkomonye will also honour the six Banyana -Banyana players and medical personnel from the province who were part of the squad that saw the team crowned their first ever Women’s African Cup of Nations title.
These sporting stars are not only lifting the Eastern Cape flag high in the national and international community, but they are role models to aspiring young people in the province. They are a living example of how one’s circumstances don’t define their path in life.
A total of 80 awardees will be celebrated on Friday evening. The awards are in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Sport Confederation and our strategic partners, National Lotteries Commission, ABSA, Old Mutual and the Boardwalk Hotel.
