South Africa: Proud moments for Nelson Mandela Bay as four of its greatest of all-time athletes, Melikhaya Frans, Shirley Nekhubui, Luxolo Adams and Ischke Senekal, will be representing the country at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA.
Melikhaya Frans will participate in the 42.2 km, Luxolo Adams will be partaking in the 200 metres sprints while Shirley Nekhubui will be part of the 4×400 metres relay quartet and lastly, Ischke Senekal will be competing in the shot put.
The best track and field athletes in the world are coming together in a celebration of diversity, human potential and athletic achievement. This extraordinary showcase is taking centre stage in the heart and home of the sport of track and field in the US in Oregon from 15 to 24 July 2022.
Addressing the athletes at Chief Dawid Stuurman Airport on Sunday, Portfolio Head for Sports Recreation, Arts and Culture, Cllr Bassie Kamana, said, “We are very proud as a City to have our athletes, not only representing the City but the country. We hope that they will come back home with the victory. We wish them all the very best”.
“Sports tourism is high on our agenda. By going abroad, they will market the city as a sports destination of choice and thus contribute to boosting our economy.
“Go to the United States to represent your African continent and come back home with the glory.”
