Africa: As part of the women’s month celebrations, the NMBM (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality) and Zantsi Showtime productions announced today at a press conference held at the Boardwalk that they will host a women’s boxing event at Nangoza Jebe Hall on August 27, 2022.
The Executive Mayor, Cllr Eugene Johnson, stated at the media conference that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is committed to levelling the playing field for women in boxing and is prepared to do so without apology.
She said that “Female boxers are rewriting history. They are assuming leadership like the lionesses they are.”
Cllr Bassie Kamana, Portfolio Head for Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, stated that women should not be afraid to assume leadership positions.
He praised women in leadership positions such as Mbali Zantsi, Founder of Zantsi Showtimes, Cllr Johnson, and Charmaine Williams, Acting Executive Director and encouraged them to open doors for more females in their field.
He spoke against Gender-based violence and said that ending it starts with men.
Mbali Zantsi, the founder of Zantsi Showtimes, expressed nothing but gratitude for the NMBM’s continuous support, which has helped make rods for female boxers in the city.
The tournament will feature Jub Jub, Cllrs Troon and Kaiser, among other surprises.
Also in attendance were the Portfolio Head for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, Cllr Mkhuseli Jack, South African Women’s Boxing Champion Razel Mohammed, and Eastern Cape bantamweight championship contender Owethu Rula, as well as NMBM officials.
