St Kitts: The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew has expressed his disappointment on the recent incidents of road accidents in the federation. The Prime Minister said that most of these incidents could have been prevented if the drivers had been careful.
Dr Drew made this observation in the light of the recent road accident, involving a 4-month-old baby who passed away and Kadedra Lewis, who is critically injured. Kadedra Lewis is also the winner of the Nevis Culturama Swimwear Queen title.
The accident, which happened between 4:00 and 4:30 PM on Sunday, has left the nation and its people in a state of shock. The accident was drastic and caused the death of the 4 month old within moments after the collision
Meanwhile, the Culturama Swimwear Queen, who is the child’s godmother and was travelling in the same vehicle as the baby, has suffered extensive injuries. The officials have shared that the pageant winner has suffered two broken legs and needed emergency surgery.
In light of the severity of the road accident, Prime Minister Drew claimed that it is important for the drivers to remain cautious. The Prime Minister also confirmed that his administrations is workimg hard to educate the road users.
According to the Prime Minister, Attorney General Garth Wilkin has been leading a Sustainable Road Safety Project (SRSP). The project was established under the aim to address traffic concerns within the administration.
The project lays down rules and regulations to make sure that all the members of the community can remain safe and sound. The in order to reinforce his point to the members of the community, Dr Terrance Drew has shared that they are working towards better roads in the country.
The steps that they will be taking to this end, includes:
- The construction of speed bumps to encourage drivers to maintain a reasonable caution while driving.
- More strict penalties for Speeding and Dangerous Driving Violations
- Enhanced Road Markings and Signage at Roundabouts to make sure that the drivers can decrease or increase their speed, as and when it is safe to do so
