Kenya has been recognised as a leading horticultural exporter. The Kenya Ports Authority held a high-level engagement with key public and private sector stakeholders.
The discussion mainly focused on the implementation of a comprehensive strategy to chart a shared plan to ease the movement of perishable goods through the Port of Mombasa. It underscored the critical role of the fresh produce sector as a key driver of the national economy.
Also, for a sector that earns the country between US $1.5 billion and US $2 billion annually has improved logistics around handling fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers. It has become urgent and strategic.
During the session, the stakeholders reviewed ongoing reforms in cold chain management. This included the upgrading of reefer capacity, quicker cargo clearance procedures, and better coordination among agencies responsible for border control. The aim is to cut down on avoidable costs and ensure that this produce arrives at global markets in the same condition it leaves Kenyan farms.
The Managing Director – Capt. William Ruto, lauded this collaborative spirit of the partner government agencies and said that it reflects the maturity of Kenya’s logistics ecosystem. He emphasised that the cooperation was essential for consolidating the gains made in port operational efficiency. It is vital for keeping Kenyan horticulture competitive in the global market.
Earlier, Indonesia’s Ambassador – Witjaksono Adji announced that his country will increase exports through the Port of Mombasa. He cited the port’s growing efficiency and its position as East Africa’s most reliable gateway.
Indonesia has always remained among Kenya’s leading trading partners. Kenya exports commodities such as tea and coffee to Indonesia, while importing palm oil and textiles from the Asian nation. Also, the Port of Mombasa handles thousands of tonnes of palm oil imported into the country from Indonesia annually.
Before this, the Danish Ambassador to Kenya – Stephan Schonemann, has reaffirmed Denmark’s continued commitment to supporting the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in delivering modern, efficient and sustainable port infrastructure across the country.
The meeting reaffirmed strong diplomatic and economic ties between Kenya and Denmark, while setting the stage for deeper collaboration in port modernisation.
