Free State: The department of Social Development Qwa Qwa office held a memorial service for state-famous social worker Sello Steven Mapeka.
He was a Social Worker who was deeply committed to the social challenges of people in Qwa Qwa. He started his career in 2002. He became a mentor, a friend, and an advocate to the young Social Workers. He Motivated them to study further and to strive for better positions so that the profession can also be highly regarded.
The memorial service was attended by Thabo Mofutsanyana District management as well as a wide range of people who knew Mapeka from many roles, activities and interactions he took part in.
The proceedings of the service included the District Director Me Mohaleroe, who was the last one of many speakers to share fond memories of Ntate Mapeka over the years. She described him as someone who loved his family, moreover, his children. She also mentioned that Mapeka was dedicated to his work, and he was a loyal social professional invested in providing exceptional services to all communities he worked in.
Apart from being a Social Worker, he was an impressive writer. He had no hesitation to speak for those without voices. Mapeka was described as an advocate of change. His writings were precise and frank and were recognised nationwide.
His colleagues spoke highly of him. They depicted him as a Social worker who loved his work, always eager to help the vulnerable. In his memory of the profession he loved and appreciated, Social workers resided in the Social Work Professional Oath.
People are saddened by the sudden demise of Sello Steven Mapeka and say it’s a huge loss for the nation. People seemed in shock, and one of the residents said, “He was not only my mentor, but a good friend, and also an advocate for me and for people like me. Whenever we need him, he is always there for us.”
