Zambia: The SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) Acting Head of Mission, Shikongo Sikongo, paid tribute to Zambia for the critical role it played in the political liberation of Southern Africa.
Shikongo Sikongo was speaking when he officiated Zambia’s 59th Independence anniversary celebrations hosted by Uniformed and Civilian Zambian personnel in SAMIM on 24 October 2023.
Shikongo Sikongo said Zambia’s independence was a reflection of sacrifices made by its Founding Father, the late Dr Kenneth David Kaunda.
He said that Dr Kaunda also fought for the liberation of Southern Africa together with other remarkable African leaders, including Samora Moises Machel, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Nelson Mandela, Quett Ketumile Joni Masire, Sam Nujoma, Agostinho Neto and Robert Mugabe among others.
And speaking on behalf of all Zambians in SAMIM, Lt Col Beriwick Mwila stressed that Zambia’s Independence Day served as a reminder of the achievements that SADC member states continued to attain through unity.
The celebration activities included a presentation by Captain Derrick Likubangwa (now Major), which showcased Zambia’s geographical location, political history, economy, tourism and other social aspects.
The celebration was held at the Zambian Contingent Headquarters and was attended by Senior Mission Leadership, Force Headquarters Staff and Contingent Commanders, among other SAMIM personnel.
The invited guests were treated to a variety of traditional Zambian dishes, Zambian Music and traditional dances.
The President of Zambia and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, Hakainde Hichilema, led Service Chiefs and Defence and Security personnel at the Independence Day celebrations at the Freedom Statue and State House Investiture ceremony and Luncheon activities.
Zambia Air Force Commander, Lt Gen Colin Barry and ZAF personnel attended the event while the ZAF Brass Band and Air Power cultural dance troupe took part in the national activities.
The 59th Independence Day anniversary was officiated by the United Republic of Tanzania President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
