South Africa: The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea paid tribute to the South African soldiers who served and sacrificed their lives under the United Nations flag during the Korean War of 1950-1953. The commemorative ceremony was held at the South African Air Force Memorial at Air Force Base Swartkop in Pretoria on June 25, 2026.
Reportedly, the event brought together the Chief of the SA National Defence Force – General Rudzani Maphwanya, ambassadors from various countries, military representatives and members of the South Korean community to honour the bravery and sacrifice of South Africans who fought during the Korean War.
As part of the programme, the Chief of the SA National Defence Force, ambassadors, and international representatives laid wreaths in memory of the fallen heroes who served with courage and dedication. Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to South Africa – Dong-Han Yang spoke at the ceremony and highlighted the contribution made by South African soldiers during the war.
Ambassador Yang further stated that from a total number of 826 soldiers who were dispatched from South Africa to Korea, a total of 37 soldiers never found their way back home. They have either been killed or declared missing in action during the Korean War. He added that today, they are commemorating the fallen Korean War veterans for their contributions to the peace of humanity on the Korean Peninsula.
Furthermore, the Korean War Hall stands as a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men during a difficult period in Korea’s history more than seven decades ago. As South Africa and the Republic of Korea continue to enjoy strong relations, ceremonies such as these ensure that the legacy of those who served is preserved for future generations.
South Africa and the Republic of Korea holds rich history together as their courage, sacrifice and commitment to peace will always be remembered and honoured.
