South African woman, identified as Will Ann has been sentenced to 25 years in Jail by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The officials have shared that the woman was found guilty of unlawfully importing 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria.
The culprit, who is 38 years old, has been arrested for trafficking the illicit substance through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja .
She brought the drugs into the country on July 6, 2026 and was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The authorities made the arrest while the culprit was travelling with her son
She was presented before the court in August and was arrested while she was being cleared among people onboard the Qatar Airways Flight QR1433, which arrived in Abuja from Doha. She pleaded guilty for the act of unlawfully importing heroin into Nigeria. She had admitted to committing the crime in an extra judicial statement before she made the statement in the courthouse.
The culprit also expressed remorse and promised to not engage in such activities again and was given leniency in her sentence. She was given 15 years of jail time on one count and 25 years of jail time on the other count.
The woman would be required to spend a combined 25 years in prison for her to make sure that the criminal offenders are deterred. The sentence will be carried out concurrently.
The presiding judge of the Federal HIgh Court Judge in Abuja stressed that law can not be guided by emotions.
She asserted that crime does not pay in the long run.
The sentencing judge also specified that the heroin which has been seized by the court of law must be destroyed if the culprit does not appeal to this judgement within a specified period which has been prescribed legally.
