South Africa: It was an early rise this morning for Steve Tshwete Local Municipality’s hierarchy as they hastily attended to clean up Midwater and Aerorand.

That’s when Municipal Manager, Mandla Mnguni and Director for Environmental and Solid Waste Management, Erald Nkabinde, clocked in at 07:30 at Traffic parking to pick up waste, together with employees at La Papillon, Lebombo Street, Waterfront, and Seinheuwel Cres Street.

According to Mnguni: “The main objective is to address challenges the employees are faced with of waste management at households, businesses and the landfill site.

“Every year, the Municipality competes in the Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC). Municipalities from all nine Provinces enter the GMC competition via the Provincial Department of Environment,” said Manager Mnguni.

Furthermore, he asserted, “the Department and Provincial Departments’ officials form a National Steering Committee which meets every quarter. The work of the Steering Committee, among others, is to oversee all GMC activities, which include the evaluation schedule, awards ceremony and review of the GMC evaluation criteria. ”

“We are ranked as a leading Municipality after receiving the trophy again last year for keeping the environment safe and the air clean and fresh. So, we have a good reason to be proud of what we have to offer and to take pride in our surroundings,” Municipal Manager Mnguni states.

Director for Environmental and Solid Waste Management, Erald Nkabinde, says: “We want to make sure that our town, parks and tourist attractions, as well as our local neighbourhood, remain safe and sparkling clean because we know that unchecked grime can lead to crime.

“We witnessed that despite the challenges the employees are faced with, they ensure that every year with the support of the community, we bring the Greenest Municipality Award home. “We encourage our community members to continue to work with the Municipality and to abide by the Municipal By-Laws at all times,” said Nkabinde.
