Two injured in tanker crash in R102 Verulam – KZN

Two people were injured after a tanker crashed down an embankment on the north bound lane of the R102 near King Shaka Airport - KZN Wednesday morning.

KwaZulu Natal, Verulam (King Shaka Airport): Two people were injured after a tanker crashed down an embankment on the northbound lane of the R102 near King Shaka Airport – KZN Wednesday morning.

A diesel tanker and a petrol tanker have reportedly crashed, resulting in a fuel spill which has caught alight, resulting in a massive fire, which is running down the highway.

Passing motorists contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) requesting assistance at the scene. Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics were immediately dispatched and arrived on the scene at approximately 07:09. 

A white tanker transporting sewage was located several metres down an embankment. The driver and his assistant sustained injuries. They were treated on scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance. 

Circumstances leading up to the accident were not immediately reported. KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics and emergency services are currently at the scene of a major incident in the N2 near NPC at the Sarnia Road overhead bridge in Durban.

The KZN EMS paramedics on the scene have reported that the two people are being treated for minor injuries. EThekwini fire and rescue fighters are busy trying to control the blaze, which has spread to both sides of the highway.

The highway has been closed to traffic, with traffic being diverted at the M7 south bound and M1 north bound. The police will investigate the cause of the crash. 

However, residents who are taking it lightly and are trying to be positive and spread positivity. As per one of the locals, he is happy as the tanker didn’t explode. He also said it would be worse, but hopefully, there is only injury.

“Thank God the Tanker didn’t explode. It should have been worse. Hope the injured have a speedy recovery,” said the users.

Moreover, there are so many tanker fatalities occurred during the New Year, but it is unreported as per the sources.
