Cape Town: The Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town has shared the progress report on Stanhope Bridge in Claremont. They have observed a good progress with the urgent repair work on the bridge.
Currently, the team is working in week two of the planned six-week remedial work timeline. If all goes well according to the plan, then the contractor should complete the remedial works in four weeks’ time, which is when the second lane from Claremont Main Road Lane will be reopened.
As per the reports, the current lane reduction is an emergency intervention after the existing retaining wall on the southeast quadrant of the Stanhope Bridge that failed on January 26, 2026.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas said that the current lane reduction on Stanhope Bridge in Claremont is an emergency intervention, after the existing retaining wall on the southeast quadrant of the Stanhope bridge fell on Monday morning, January 26, 2026.
Quintas added that their contractor is on track with this emergency repair work, and if all goes according to plan, then the work should be completed in a month’s time span, and the lane will then be reopened to traffic again.
The MMC for Urban Mobility, clarified that they understand the great inconvenience which motorists, local residents and the general public is experiencing with the current situation, and they empathise with the affected commuters. He assured all that the team is working hard and is trying to complete the remedial work as soon as possible. They know it very well and will make sure to keep residents updated with the progress.
Further, the Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town has commenced work on the Stanhope Bridge in mid-2025. These works form part of the City’s MyCiTi Phase-2A construction project. And work along this bridge is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2027.
