Zambia: Motorist in Zambezi District have come together and called on the local authority to accelerate the construction of a modern bus station. The motorists believe that the new structure will help inn improving the current congested and dusty operating conditions in the area.
The District does not have a bus station with modern facilities, which is a major requirement for the tourism sector. The motorists have shared their concerns with the media. The taxi drivers have said that the district lacks designated areas for bus and taxi operators.
This has led to parking along roads and in front of shops and markets, resulting in a challenging working environment. The motorists are unable to navigate work productively in the current circumstances.
One motorist Musau Kahilu says the absence of a proper bus station has impacted their operations. He added that at the same time, it has also led to financial losses and increased health risks due to dust exposure.
“We have been endured this dust for too long. The lack of a reliable bus station or a taxi rank has affected not only our operations but also the risk of infectious diseases due to the dust that we inhale,” he stated.
He emphasised the importance of expediting the construction of the bus station to ensure smooth operations for motorists in the district.
Zambezi Town Council Secretary, Dulani Phiri urged motorists to exercise patience, as completing the bus station is their top priority.
Mr Phiri noted that funds have already been allocated for the project in the 2024 budgetand that the current phase two of construction is nearing completion at the roofing level.
“I have to assure you and indicate that it’s one project that is being prioritised because we want to bring order and sanity in the Central Business District,” said Mr Phiri
He further added that the council is committed to ensuring the successful completion of the bus station to provide a designated and organised area for bus and taxi operators
