Zambia: Chipolopolo Legends will entertain Malawi Legends at the newly refurbished David Kaunda stadium in Chipata on Saturday, 28 October, 2023.
The match, organised by the Football Association of Zambia in the Eastern province, will serve as a post-independence birthday gift to football lovers as well as cement the companionship existing between Zambia and Malawi.
The Zambian Legends team comprises mostly 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad led by captain Christopher Katongo, Chisamba Lungu, Chintu Kampamba, Hichani Himoonde, Kalililo Kakonje and Felix Katongo.
Other players to have donned the Chipolopolo shirt that will feature for Zambia include Fwayo Tembo, Billy Mwanza, Clive Hachilensa, Nchimunya Mweetwa, Justin Zulu, Jimmy Chisenga, Given Singuluma and Clifford Mulenga.
The Malawi side will be captained by former defender now Flames coach Patrick Mabedi and will also contain many players who featured at the 2010 AFCON, including goalkeeper Simplex Nthara, Mabedi and James Sangala.
Former midfielder Joseph Kamwendo and forward Russell Mwafulirwa, Fisher Kondowe, Elvis Kafoteka, Allan Kamanga and Harry Nyirenda have also made the squad.
The match will kick off at 15h00 and will be preceded by a contest involving the Eastern province U17 team and their Lusaka province counterparts at 13h00.
People are excited about the match and showing their excitement on social media. One of the residents said, “These are names I remember from the COSAFA Castle Cup days… Russell Mwafulirwa and others. Great to know they will be coached by Kina Phiri, a national legend with 71 international goals.”
“It seems Rainford Kalaba naba FAZ ni spark, they haven’t mentioned him and are in doubt if he will be part of it,” said another user of Facebook.
