Zambia: A 12 year old boy has committed suicide on Sunday. The victim is a resident of the Chipyola Compound in Lundazi District in Eastern Province.
According to the officials, he has committed suicide by hanging himself using a rope in an unfinished building. The officials have shared that the deceased has been identified as Whyted Kumwenda.
Eastern Province Commissioner of Police, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident to the media officers in Lundazi. He also identified the victim in the same media interaction.
Further, Mweemba said the incident happened yesterday between 10:00 hours and 17:00 hours on Sunday. The officials further said that the incident was reported to Lundazi Police Station by the mother of the deceased.
The officials have identified thee mother as 43 year old Anna Lwenje, who is a resident of Chipyola Compound. He explained that the deceased’s mother informed Police that her son had aoproached her at homeand requested money to buy medicine.
At this point the mother asked him if he was sick but declined saying he wanted money to buy medicine to kill himself.
“The matter surprised his mother who went on to find out what was the reason for taking his own life but the boy didn’t give any reason behind his decision hence he was talked to and later left home,” he explained.
Further Police Commissionwr Mweemba further said the deceased’s mother thought he had gone to play with his friends. However, she got worried when he did not come back home during lunch time.
They started searching for him and his body was later discovered by his aunt Beatrice Nkhoma. The boy was hanging with a rope about 100 metres from the family home in an unfinished building around 18:40 hours.
He added that the motive behind the suicide case is not yet known and Police has instituted investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has since been deposited in the Lundazi District Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
