16 Elite Mauritian Athletes Honoured for Stellar Performances in International Sports

Mauritius: A total of 16 elite Mauritian athletes were rewarded yesterday, at the Côte d'Or National Sports Complex, for their outstanding performances in local and international sports competitions in the presence of the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Stephan Toussaint and other personalities.

Mauritius: A total of 16 elite Mauritian athletes were rewarded yesterday, at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex, for their outstanding performances in local and international sports competitions in the presence of the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Stephan Toussaint and other personalities.

Addressing the Mauritian athletes, Minister Toussaint commended all of them for their efforts and congratulated them on their brilliant performances for the year 2022. He dwelt on facilities provided to athletes by the Ministry, such as fitness tests being done at the National Sports Complex. 

He also highlighted that dental screening would be offered shortly to better prepare them for upcoming sports events such as the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games, the Jeux de la Francophonie, and the 2023 African Games.

The Sports awardees are as follows:

  • Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2022

Sportsman of the Year: Brian François Fils – Boxe Savate Assaut

He won a silver medal at the Championnats Du Monde Savate Assaut 2022 in Milan, Italy.

  • Sportswoman of the Year: Ms Marie Sharone Kirsline Clair – Boxe Française Savate. She won a bronze medal at the Championnats Du Monde Savate Assaut 2022 in Milan, Italy.

They received a cheque of Rs 125,000, each.

  • Junior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2022
  • Junior Sportsman of the Year: Mr Louis Ryley Romain – Kickboxing
  • He won bronze medals at the Wako Junior World Championships 2022, Jesolo in Lido, Italy and the 7th International Turkish Open Kickboxing World Cup 2022, Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Junior Sportswoman of The Year: Alicia Kok Shun – Swimming. She won a silver medal at the 2022 CANA Senior African Swimming Championships in Tunisia.
  • Both of them received a cheque of Rs 80,000, each.
  • Most Promising Sportsman and Sportswoman of The Year 2022
  • Most Promising Sportsman of the Year: Mr Matteo Tin Wan Yuen – swimming.
  • Most Promising Sportswoman of the Year: Ms Julia Nelly Mamet – Muay Thai.

They each received Rs 60,000.

Coach of the Year 2022

Coach of the Year 2022: Mr Roger Kersley Visenjoue – Boxe Française Savate

The Coach of the Year won a cheque of Rs 60,000.

Team of the Year 2022

Team of the Year: Cycling

The team comprised:

4. Mr Christopher Rougier-Lagane

5. Mr Aurelien De Comarmond

The team obtained a cheque of Rs 75,000.

Each para sportsperson awardee won a cheque of Rs 25 000.
