Zambia: Four people have lost their lives in a Road Traffic Accident along the Great North Road in Kapiri Mposhi District. The road accident happened on Thursday around 08:30 hours at Katanino Trading area.
A Volvo tanker truck and a Hino Ranger collided after the driver of the Hino Ranger vehicle tried to overtake the other vehicle. The authorities believe that the overtake manoeuvre might have been improper which caused the accident.
According to the Police report, a Volvo tanker truck was traveling from Ndola to Nakonde. The registration number of the truck is BCB 5452ZM and it was being driven by 36-year-old Kennedy Chiluba.
The registration number of the Hino Ranger was BBA 8110 and the said vehicle was driven by 32 year old Fex Muleya. The vehicle was traveling from Monze to Kasumbalesa.
Along the way, the Hino Ranger ended up colliding with the oncoming tanker truck after the driver tried to overtake. The ranger was carrying a total of 18 passengers, goats and pigs.
Two male passengers who were on board the Hino Ranger died on the spot meanwhile while two other passengers died at the Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital.
The victims of the crash were rushed to the district hospital for treatment. According to the PPRO Hamoonga, 11 other passengers sustained serious injuries. They are currently receiving treatment at Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital mortuary. The police authorities will keep the bodies in the mortuary for identification. Afterwards, the authorities will conduct the post-mortem exam after which families would be allowed to make arrangements for last rites.
Police Public Relations Officer Hamoonga said that the driver of the Hino Ranger light truck is on the run. The police force is trying to find the culprit and bring him to justice.
Meanwhile, the police officers urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations by prioritizing safety. The number of road accidents in the region has seen a dramatic rise in the country.
