South Africa, Madidi: The North West MEC for Community Safety, and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, on Thursday, 21 September 2023, visited Madidi on the occasion of Crime Prevention Imbizo.

The MEC, Sello Lehari, has expressed in agreement with the community of Madidi that a satellite police station will aid the alleviation of crime in the area.

MEC Lehari made the endorsement during the Department’s Anti Crime Imbizo in Madidi village near Brits in the Madibeng Local Municipality. The MEC was responding to a plea made by the community and also added that the department will prioritise plans to assist the community with the establishment of a police station in due course.

“The Department has embarked on a series of Imbizos to ascertain the real causes of crime, to respond by putting intervention measures in place as we strive to create safer communities for our people.”

“The department will fast track its planning to ensure that we support the community of Madidi in the establishment of a police station. In the interim, we will embark on a process to assist them with getting a satellite police station,” said Lehari.

The Anti Crime Imbizo is initiated by the department as a means to engage communities in the fight against crime. This involves collaboration with other government departments, entities, religious groups, traditional authorities and various communities to find sustainable means of reducing crime.

The Imbizos are implemented within the District Development Model (DDM) to increase the efficiency and coordination of service delivery programmes.

This outreach programme comprised of the law enforcement cluster and Madibeng Local Municipality, represented by the MMC Esther Bopape as Acting Executive Mayor and MMC for Public Safety, Fleet and Facility Management, Cllr Feni Motepe.

Residents raised their concerns about activities and incidents of crime they encounter daily in Madidi.

After comments by the residents, MEC Lehari responded that “The Department has embarked on a series of Imbizos to ascertain the real causes of crime, to respond by putting intervention measures in place as we strive to create safer communities for our people”.

The MEC further supported the call for a satellite police station in Madidi as it will aid in the alleviation of crime in the area.
