Botswana: Dr Mokgweetsi E.K.Masisi visited Xabacha1 in the Okavango Constituency, where he donated an Angus Bull to Kaveimbirahiua Kareru and his family. Kaveimbirahiua Kareru currently has a mixed Tswana herd of cattle.
Speaking to the farmers who had gathered from nearby cattle posts to witness this morning’s ceremony, President Masisi called on Batswana to donate bulls to farmers who are in need, as this could help improve cattle breeds in the country.
The President of Botswana, Masisi, started the Bull Donation Initiative as part of his promise to Batswana to see it become a prosperous nation. It is hoped that this initiative will not only improve cattle breeds but will improve beef production.
The bulls being donated are a kind gesture from farmers who see the need to improve the current genetic stock across the country.
“I have received a diamond,” said Mr. Kareru when thanking President Masisi. Mr. Kareru said the bull will make a difference not only to his stock but also to his neighbours.
For his part, the Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Molebatsi Molebatsi, said this initiative aims to improve the declining cattle population in Botswana.
He urged farmers to embrace new technology to improve their breeds.
This week, President Masisi visited four Constituencies, Maun West, Maun East, Okavango and Ngamiland Constituencies, championing the bull donation initiative and delivering the bulls directly to the farmer’s cattle posts. The bulls being donated have passed fertility tests and reproductive tests.
Beneficiaries that are selected are those that have shown good management of cattle and an ability to improve cattle breed and population with the support they have received.
Member of Parliament for Maun East, Goretetse Kekgonegile, thanks His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi for fulfilling his promise of donating 40 high pedigree bulls to Okavango, Ngamiland, Maun East and Maun West.
