IJM Kenya hosted a workshop to improve the police services from Monday, November 13, 2023, to Friday, November 24, 2023. The theme of this Workshop is “Improving Police Service Delivery towards a 21st Century Policing“.
The Workshop aimed to deliver improved police service to the Western region of Kenya, especially Kakamega and Vihiga Counties.
During the workshop, the officers are taken through various learning lessons. These lessons include:
- Principles of Community Engagement
- Evidence Management
- Human Rights
- Personal Ethics and Integrity Standards
- Mental Health- Stress & Vicarious Trauma Management
among others.
IJM appreciate the role played by police in the Criminal Justice System of ensuring security for all in most cases under challenging circumstances.
They emphasised that accountability is one of the values of NPS (National Police Service in 21st-century policing.
“We believe that if police in the Criminal Justice System delivered their service professionally, there would be more justice for all and less complaints against them,” IJM added.
Further, they also believed that accountability is a critical pillar in promoting public confidence and reliability in the Criminal Justice System. Accountability plays a crucial role for police officers.
IJM has thus been committed to strengthening policing systems through Advocacy and Capacity building of police officers and ensuring mental wellness programs for their wellbeing.
This includes championing police-community engagements, which is important in building trust and legitimacy.
During the training, IJM donated 1,000 police manuals; they believe that the police manuals will be of help in daily operations as an individual police officer according to police regulations.
The training was officially opened by several delegations from the Counties, including Regional Police Commander in Western Region Kiprono Langat and IJM Kenya Country Director Benson Shamala.
Reportedly, the IJM Kenya, International Justice Mission is a Non-Governmental Organisation which aims at a global mission to protect people in poverty from violence and other crimes.
