Karoi, Zimbabwe: Five people have died in a road traffic accident. The accident happened after a CAG bus collided with a Mazda B2200 truck in Magunje, Mashonaland West Province.
The fatal crash occurred along Karoi-Binga Road on Thursday afternoon, in which ten other passengers were severely injured in the accident.
The Spokesperson for Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and Assistant Commissioner – Paul Nyathi confirmed that the CAG bus was travelling towards Magunje when the accident occurred.
While narrating the tragedy, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said, “The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 26 km peg along Karoi-Binga Road on January 4, 2024, at around 1:00 p.m.”
He added, “A CAG bus, which was travelling towards Magunje collided head-on with a Mazda B2200 that was going in the opposite direction with 15 passengers on board.’
“Three people from the Mazda pick-up died on the spot while the other two died after getting admitted at Karoi Hospital and 10 others were reported to be severely injured,” said Paul Nyathi.
Notably, all deceased were travelling in the Mazda pick-up truck. As per the recent statement released by Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the investigation is still ongoing and is yet to search for the cause of the accident, which is underway.
As per the sources, a similar case appeared in February 2023. In that incident, a CAG bus overturned near Kadoma and left eight passengers dead. Twenty passengers were reported severely injured.
Upon searching, it was found that the accident occurred because a tyre got burst. The accident raised concerns about the company’s vehicle maintenance practices.
Reportedly, a month later, another CAG bus collided with a haulage truck near Gweru, resulting in seven deaths and injuring 15 people.
Social commentators have graved concerns over CAG’s. They continued the trend of being involved in fatal road accidents and contributed to road carnage statistics in Zimbabwe.
