The acting Prime Minister handles the responsibility for the Ministry of Housing and Land Use Planning and the Ministry of Tourism. The housing unit construction project spans a land area exceeding seven acres in Riche Terre 1.

The housing units are designated for inhabitants of the Port Louis Maritime and Port Louis East region. According to Housing and Land Use Planning, the construction is 50% complete and will be fully executed by the end of this year.

“In response, the establishment of the 176 two-storey housing units, equipped with two bedrooms and the necessary amenities, will help to relieve the housing problem,” he affirmed.

He also appreciated the construction company for respecting the set deadline regarding the completion of the social housing project.

In addition, Obeegadoo dwelt on numerous neighborhood facilities that would be provided to the inhabitants. The facilities will include:

  • A community center
  • A commercial space
  • small shops
  • A taxi on-site for emergency case

  • Playground for children
  • A walking or jogging track in the perimeter of the housing units.

During the visit, Vice-Prime Minister, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo also shared his views on the housing project. He reiterated the unavailability of adequate land spaces for residential purposes in regions such as Plaine Verte and Roche Bois.

On this score, Dr Husnoo pointed out that an estimated 225 housing units would be set up in Arsenal for the residents. “Moreover, effective drainage systems have been catered for to protect the housing units from flash floods and unpredictable weather conditions,” he assured.
