Reaction unit officers have received reports of a 10th-grade student being in possession of explosives. An off-duty Member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received the information of the threat.
He was tipped off to the information on Saturday night at approximately 20:28. The tip suggested that a student from a school in Phoenix – KwaZulu Natal was in possession of three (3) bombs.
The suspect has been identified, and reaction unit officers have received reports of a 10th-grade student being in possession of explosives. The information about the threat was received by an Off-Duty Member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).d as a 17 year old student of grade ten. The name and further details about the suspect’s identity have been withheld for protection.
The suspect allegedly sent out images of an explosive via WhatsApp chat with a friend. The photograph of the chat has been attached below. In this chat, the suspect announced that he would bomb a vehicle.
At this time, the reaction unit officers noted that they contacted the authorities including South African Police Service at King Shaka International Airport, SAPS Verulam & the Umhlali SAPS Dog Unit.
After the chat reached the reaction officers, started acting on the tip. They further uncovered information about the location and identity of the juvenile suspect.
The reaction unit officers contacted a Colonel from the SAPS Provincial Office in KZN. The officer then shared the information and images that they had received.
After a brief investigation, the Colonel contacted the Reaction Officer who gave the initial information. The officers established that the images of the bombs that were circulated were downloaded from a website.
The SAPS officers also noted that the identical picture was of a bomb replica designed to be used in an Airsoft game. The explosive specialist on the investigation forwarded the website to the Reaction Officer.
The student claimed that he had ordered the bombs online.
The people of the country have claimed that they understand the gravity of the threat. “In this day and age every threath has to be taken serious … There’s really sick ppl out there.”
